Dinner a Huge Success - $152,000 Raised!

“To go forward, we must look to the past.” This was the message of Cardinal George Pell to over 550 guests and supporters of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter, at the Raise Ezechiel Fundraising Dinner, at the Westella Renaissance, Lidcombe, on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

Ezechiel House is the Novitiate House of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter, which trains priests in the rite of the Roman Missal of 1962, usually known as the Traditional Latin Mass. The novitiate enables young men to discern their vocations and begin their studies in Australia, before travelling to one of the Fraternity’s international seminaries. Since 2004, four young men have been ordained, while another three candidates have progressed to the Seminary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, USA.

His Eminence drew the attention of the audience to the importance of a local novitiate house. “I’m a supporter of overseas study,” he said, “but I am also a believer in putting down roots in your own country.” The Cardinal also expressed his support for the liturgical apostolate of the Fraternity, acknowledging the imperative need for a restoration of reverence to public worship.

Guests also heard from Brisbane-based Jesuit, Rev. Fr Gregory Jordan, who noted the large number of young people at the fundraiser, and described, from his own pastoral experience, the increasing demand from the young for traditional and reverent forms of worship.

The multicultural character of the Fraternity apostolate was reflected in appeal addresses delivered in both English and Mandarin Chinese. A video presentation highlighted other aspects of the wide-ranging pastoral care offered by Fraternity priests, including adult and children’s education, and home visits to the elderly and the sick.

The evening concluded with cheers and applause, after the announcement that the dinner had raised an outstanding $152,000 for the project. Grateful for this generous support, the priests of the Fraternity of St Peter look forward to the completion of Ezechiel House.
